We are the free! by Kristen Ungerecht

You have to fight for it.

You have to wake up in the morning, get out of bed and say, “I’m not going to let this bind me.” It’s a decision – one made deep inside of your spirit – to let go of fear, of addictions, of all that tries to weigh you down inside. It’s the fight against your own flesh, the lies you whisper to yourself at night and walk inside of during the day. It’s the fight against the half-truths and graceless enforcements that come from a lack of understanding and love. It’s the fight against the moments that build up and wrap around you like quicksand, waiting for you to sink inside of them and find yourself stuck.

You have to fight for freedom.

You have to fight.

Freedom doesn’t come easily.

The free are not a magical bunch who never see hardship. No, we struggle. We struggle through our circumstances, our emotions, our negative self images and our selfish ambitions. We wrestle through indignities and waves of fear that threaten to overwhelm us. There is no magic here to keep the storms of life at bay– there is just grit brought about by relentless love and the hope of a Savior.

The free are not sitting on the sidelines of life, wishing for their time to move. We’re dancing already. We’re running already. We’re pursuing our purpose and living out our callings – one day at a time, moment by moment. We are not waiting for permission to be who we are called to be. We don’t listen to the voices inside that whisper of “I can’t,” “I’m not,” or “I’m unable,” because we know the deeper truth. We know that while we’re unable on our own, we carry inside of us the ability of a steadfast strength. One that doesn’t leave, forsake, or fail.

We can. We are. We will.

These are the words of the free. These are the words of the ones who put on bravery like a second skin and seek to rise above that which would confine and keep them from walking in bold, powerful ways in this world.

We can. We are. We will.

Because we are the free.
